Natural cures for a chest infection

Since Christmas I have been suffering with a chest infection. I have also had pain in the shoulder. At first I thought that the pain was muscular, however after going to see my GP she confirmed that it could be an infection in my lung, and perscribed antibiotics. This is now the second course of antibiotics. I need to find and an alternative to cure my chest infection

Besides antibiotic treatment, there are a few remedies you can try out at home to help keep the condition in check. Since chest infections are usually associated with fever and possible dehydration, it is essential to keep the level of fluids in the body high. You need to keep up a regular intake of water. If you have a habit of smoking, then you need to stop immediately, as this will worsen the condition. Even breathing becomes painful during a chest infection and you are likely to feel tired and weak. As the mucus is blocking the airways, you tend to cough frequently in an attempt to dispel it. The viral infection causes the mucus to become infected with bacteria. As such it is a good idea to take herbs that are anti-microbial in nature such as thyme or hyssop and coltsfoot, which also serve as decongestants and help to treat coughs. These herbs prevent infections from occurring and help to reduce existing symptoms, thus speeding up recovery. Mullein is an herb with anti-inflammatory properties that helps to reduce inflammation in the mucus membranes of the lungs and also the bronchial tract.

Sleep is quite important to boost the body’s immunity against infections and as such herbs that help you sleep better such as cowslip and chamomile are very effective. Cowslip taken with honey also helps to cleanse the lungs of mucus. Inhalation and chest rubs are also helpful in bringing immediate relief. Licorice is an expectorant and anti-inflammatory herb which is helpful in dealing with infections of the respiratory kind. An infusion of the root of elecampane is used to make a syrup that acts as a warming tonic for infections in the chest. Due to its expectorant action it clears the bronchial tubes and fights the infection. You may also make a poultice of mustard seeds by mixing 100 gm of ground mustard seeds with some warm water to form a thick paste. Take two thin sheets of muslin and spread the paste between them, while it is still warm. Apply it to the chest and leave it on until the paste cools, breathing deeply while doing this.

More ways to protect yourself from swine flu

Well before we start please don't kiss any pigs!. There is no chance for this young man in the above image, or is it a new cure?

Doctors’ surgeries are reporting a huge increase in the number of cases of Swine flu. But put these numbers into perspective, millions of people who will probably get swine flu, most will only experience mild symptoms, so dont panic.

Here is what you can do to help protect yourself. The most important thing is to make sure your immune system is in top condition. You can improve its condition by eating the following foods: Shellfish, chicken, liver, oily fish, wheatgerm, high antioxidant vegetables and fruit such as oranges, carrots, and sweet potato, yogurt, sunflower seeds and seaweed.
The best supplements to use are vitamin c, ensure that you are using a good brand name, and that is 1000mg.
The trace element Zinc has been found to boost natural immunity against disease, and also aids the excretion of of toxic cadmium found in cigarette smoke.
Garlic too can help boost the immune system, it contains a potent sulpher compound Allicin. In cream form Allicin was used in clinical trials, and found to kill the so-called super bug (MRSA), which is resistant to antibiotics.

Other help for the immune system is to make sure you stay hydrated, and drink enough water. Get plenty of rest. Try to reduce contact with substances that increase the load on the bodies defences such as tobacco smoke, car fumes, and excess alcohol.

If you catch flu stay at home and rest. Drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol. If you cannot eat, try chicken soup it is known to be quite good if not feeling well.

Use antibiotics only if your desperate

The general advice from your doctor will be that you don't need antibiotics for a cold or even flu, unless there are complications, and this is good advice. Antibiotics if overused are not good for you and if you do overuse them they simply will not work.

My wife told me an interesting story yesterday, and this is true. Her friends mother, who is in her early seventies has been lucky enough to have never taken antibiotics in her life. Unfortunately due to a disease she has had to have part of her foot removed. She was given antibiotics to prevent infection, but because she has never had antibiotics before the healing process has been amazing, and she is feeling much better.

S0 the moral to the story is don't take antibiotics unless you are desperate. If you do need to take antibiotics it may be better to eat live yogurt after you have completed the course, as the antibiotics will kill off the good bacteria in your gut as well as the bad.

The easy way to detox your life.

Get rid of illness and never feel under the weather again by boosting your immune system, and detoxing your life.
Many of us seem to be getting more colds and illnesses. They hang on for much longer, and then we catch something else because our immune systems have been weakened, due to the fact that they have just been fighting an illness. And so the loop continues.
There are many things you can do to strengthen your body's immunity.
Kombucha is a recently rediscovered mushroom beverage, which has been known for centuries in Asia and used as a reviving drink.
The tea has antibiotic, antibacterial and antiviral properties and purifies the body by binding to toxins and promoting their excretion. It contains digestive enzymes and valuable lactobacilli which improve metabolism, also several of the B vitamins and glucoronic acid, a liver detoxifier. Kombucha cleanses the liver and kidneys, creating several health benefits such as increasing energy levels, digestion, improving skin conditions, and promoting a feeling of well-being. Ready made Kombucha tea is now available in many health food shops. Please note diabetics should avoid Kombucha.
Many people have reported amazing improvements in a range of chronic conditions, from psoriasis, constipation, fatigue, thyroid deficiency, hair loss and brittle nails.
