Genetics learned how to get insulin from plants

Genetics of the Canadian company SemBioSys Genetics began testing on humans of insulin derived from plants

A new source of much-needed hormone for diabetics will be cheaper.

Insulin production was carried out initially release its analogs from cells of animals (cattle and pigs). These compounds are different from human insulin structure, so in the future it was necessary to produce their chemical modification. However, the method proved too expensive for industrial production.

A little later, for the same purpose was used bacteria which, when genetically modified, begin to synthesize insulin analogue. This method caught on because the required changes in the structure of a less serious derived molecules.

In SemBioSys Genetics took a different tack. Researchers have built a safflower gene that causes a plant to produce a compound called scientists proinsulin. Then the substance was treated with special enzymes and received a special type of insulin - SBS-1000.

The tests showed that the structure, physical properties and functionality of SBS-1000 corresponds to human insulin, as well as safe for health, transmit medicinews.ru.

Scientists first tested the substance in rodents and primates, and recently came into the hands of man. Now in the UK are the first stages of clinical trials: 30 healthy volunteers screened for itself the action of synthetic hormones.

Scientists compare the effect of SBS-1000 with two other commercial preparations used to treat diabetes, and study its biological effect on humans.

According to scientists, a new method of insulin (in case of successful completion of testing on humans) will significantly reduce production costs. In particular, it will not have to perform complex and costly processing of bacteria.
