CALCIUM DEFICIENCY

Adults need about 800mg of calcium per day. Pregnant and nursing women, and children and growing adolescents need a little more. The increased demand may be met by milk products. Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium from the intestine.

Calcium is contained in:

* Milk and dairy products.

* Whole wheat bread.

* Vegetables.

* Nuts.

Calcium is important for the body:

* Bones and teeth.

* Muscle and nerve activity.

* Defense against infections and allergies.

* Blood clotting.

True calcium deficiency can occur when:

* Too little milk and milk products consumption, particularly in pregnant women, nursing mothers and growing children.

* Use of softened water.

* Vitamin D deficiency.

* Certain diseases of the parathyroid gland.

* Chronic kidney disease.

* As a side effect of certain medications (eg diuretics).

Can cause a temporary calcium deficiency due to rapid breathing (hyperventilation), eg with excitement come with the consequence of tetany (see below).

Consequences of calcium deficiency are:

* Formation of less stable bone and teeth.

* Increased excitability of nerves and muscles (including the heart muscle).

* Tetany: After tingling feeling, tingling or Pelzigkeitsgefühl in the face, hands and feet cramps occur. Distortion of the facial muscles, obstetrician of the hands, equinus of the feet, shortness of breath by spasms of the bronchi, abdominal cramps, consciousness is preserved.

* Mental disorders.

Calcium overdose leads to

* Muscle weakness.

* Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, constipation, pain).

* Calcification in the tissue. (For example: kidney stones).

* Listlessness and depression.

Calcium supplements

* There are calcium supplements as effervescent tablets, tablets, injection, vials, etc., often in combination with potassium or magnesium or with multivitamins.

* For the prevention or treatment of allergies, skin allergies, sun allergy, insect stings should be taken at least 500mg per day.

* To prevent bone loss (osteoporosis) are doses of about 1000 mg daily is necessary when a calcium rich diet is not possible.
